Shona Sculpture of Solitary Figure
A hand-carved sculpture of a human figure in the Shona style of Zimbabwe. The sculpture, carved from black springstone, uses areas of high polish to reveal an angular head and peaceful visage with closed eyes, while working with the natural texture of the stone to describe its cascading hair. Springstone has a natural outer layer of light brown, creating a pleasing ombre as the polished stone darkens to black moving up the figure. This approach is typical of Shona artwork, a modern style which fuses traditional techniques and concepts with contemporary aesthetics and relies on the sculptor’s ability to uncover the hidden images already contained in the raw rock.
