Thick-walled Studio Pottery Cup with Oil Spot Glaze
A contemporary studio pottery cup with thick walls and a smoothly sloped lip finished with a distinctive oil spot glaze. The oil spot technique produces a striking effect when, during firing, the top layer of color recedes in an irregular constellation of spots, revealing the glaze color beneath. In contrast to a volcano glaze, where the spot is formed by glaze bubbling, the texture of oil spot glazes is much smoother, without the dramatic crater effect. In this example, larger spots pool at the bottom of the cup, suggesting a thicker layer of glaze.
