Model 4656 Gateleg Table by George Nelson for Herman Miller
George Nelson’s 1947 design for Herman Miller was an updated take on the classic gateleg table. The central panel support has four rotating legs that allow for more stability than the traditional two-leg design. The innovative box-jointed hinge allows the leaves to turn down while preserving a 90˚ angle at the edges when the leaves are dropped. In this position, the table functions as a small sideboard that fits seamlessly with Nelson's Basic Cabinet series, released the same year. This example is produced in walnut with superior grain figuring on the tabletop and central panel.
