Studio Pottery Ashtray by Robert Maxwell
A small stoneware ashtray by renowned California art ceramicist Robert Maxwell with an irregular, crenelated edge and distinctive glaze work. The body of the piece is unfinished stoneware, with layered glaze around the interior. The bottom of the heavy piece is finished with a glossy glaze that has fractured. This process, known as crazing, is technically a glaze flaw that has been used stylistically throughout the history of art ceramics for its compelling web of fine lines.
Inscribed on the underside, “© Robert Maxwell.”
4.25” width x 4” depth x 1.25” height.
Excellent vintage condition; structurally sound with some appropriate signs of use at edges.
