Glazed Ceramic Vase by Ettore Sottsass for Bitossi
An early vase by Ettore Sottsass for Bitossi, this line of tri-glazed vessels and serveware was commissioned by the Italian ceramicist by a Dutch department store, De Bijenkorf. Produced c. 1958, the ovoid design layers a pebbled, matte black glaze over a white glaze, then emblazoned with a swash of pale blue volcanic glaze. On this particular example, the “eruptions” are particularly fine, showing just pinpoints of the black glaze beneath. Signed with reference to the colorway “Bigia - Italy” on foot.
Condition: Excellent original condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. Small area of discoloration at foot appears to have occurred during firing.
Dimensions: 8” height x 5” diameter; interior diameter at mouth is 2.5”
