Hans Wegner "Mega/New Papa Bear" Lounge Chair by AP Stolen
A rare edition of Hans Wegner's most iconic chair, the Mega Papa Bear Chair. This piece has all the elements of the classic Papa Bear Chair: elegant paneled detailing in the backrest upholstery, a dramatic wing-back, and cantilevered arms. The outstretched arms were once described by a critic as, “great bear paws embracing you from behind”. One of the main distinguishing characteristics that sets this chair apart from the original design is its much wider and flatter armrests. The body of the chair is overall wider in comparison to the original Model AP19 design.
The “Papa Bear Chair” (Model AP19), made in the early 50s by AP Stolen, was declining in sales so they decided to redesign the look calling it the Mega or New Papa Bear in 1968 (Model AP69). Very few were made, as it was commercially unsuccessful. This piece is still in its original patinated brown leather upholstery with oak legs and armrests.
37" width x 35.5" depth x 36" height, 16" seat height
Good vintage condition; The chair has been professionally cleaned with age appropriate patina on leather.
