Mexican Modern Convertible Coffee/Dining Table by Michael van Beuren
Bauhaus-trained, Mexico City-based Michael van Beuren created highly functional modern design inspired by Mexican vernacular styles and materials. This example is a convertible table with a teak frame and irregular shape with concave and convex sides. An under-frame of the table is strung with rattan, woven in a multi-strand basket weave resembling a checkerboard. An inset piece of glass brings the table surface even with the wooden frame and highlights the organic transparency of the weave. The rectangular frame base rotates on a hinged joint to shift the piece from coffee to dining table height. Marked on underside with factory notation, “Mesa #3.” We also have a van Beuren dining table available for which this table can function as an extension when used at dining height.
Condition: Excellent vintage condition; professionally cleaned and polished. New glass has been cut according to original specifications.
Dimensions: As a coffee table, this piece measures 37.5” long x 35.5” wide x 21” tall; as a dining table the height converts to 28.5”
