Pierre Cardin Dining Table for Roche Bobois
Dining Table by Pierre Cardin for Roche Bobois, Italy, c.1970s. High gloss black lacquered solid wood dining table with an inlaid multilayered wood detail that runs across the table surface in between beveled square sections. This detail is also reflected in the table legs and on the back of the matching dining chairs. Table edges are rounded to create a softer profile to the form. The middle leaf section is removable to create a square table. Marked [Made in Italy] on underside.
Pierre Cardin worked for several couture houses including Christian Dior and was best known for creating groundbreaking designs in 1950s fashion. He drew public attention after leaving the fashion house by introducing novel ideas and styles - de-emphasizing a woman’s curves. He expanded his design work into furniture where symmetrical forms, lacquer and figured veneer finishes, and metal accents like brass and aluminum were signature details.
