Often labeled a “mid-century modernist,” American designer Phillip Lloyd Powell produced work that went beyond the typical boundaries of Modernist design in both form and function. Rather than relying on industrial manufacturing methods, Powell preferred hand-carving techniques that allowed him to shape and highlight the natural character of the wood. He became especially well known for his cabinets, which often opened to reveal intricate interior details, sometimes lined with silver leaf or fabric. In addition to wood, Powell incorporated modern materials such as metal, stone, and slate, using them to achieve the crisp, refined lines that became a defining feature of his work.
